Mark Mitchell

Mark Mitchell Sr. was born on November 14, 1957, in Newark, New Jersey, the youngest of eleven children to the late Henry Sr. and Genevieve Mitchell. He received his education through the Newark Public School System and began his journey into the workforce at the young age of 15.

Mark started as a Driver Apprentice and, through hard work and determination, became a driver for Landew and Blume Sawdust and Shaving Company in Newark, NJ. He remained a loyal and dedicated employee there for over 35 years. He also worked briefly in building maintenance with New Community Corporation and managed Hoops Place Sports Bar in Newark for over a decade, often juggling both jobs with dedication and drive.

At age 17, Mark began a family with his first love, the late Juliette Moore, with whom he had two sons, Christopher and Terrance Sr. In 1979, he married Mary Hinton-Massenburg, and together they had four children: three sons, the late Demeatrice, Shawntee, and Mark Jr., and a daughter, Genevieve, lovingly named after his mother. In 1991, Mark met the late Elizabeth Butler, and they welcomed two sons, Marquise and Malcolm. Later in life, he married the late Catina Mitchell in 2005, and in 2007 they welcomed his youngest son, Jayquan.

Mark had a passion for life and a love for people. He enjoyed playing cards—especially pity-pat—listening to music, entertaining guests, and cooking his legendary seafood pasta salad. He was known for his big smile, warm heart, and unwavering loyalty to his family and friends. He shared a unique and special bond with his many nieces and nephews, and his presence lit up any room he entered.

Mark is preceded in death by his wife Catina Mitchell; siblings Gregory, Charles, Gail, Debra, and Alice; his beloved son Demeatrice; and his grandson Terrance Mark Moore Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memory: five siblings—Dale, Henry, Gilda, Marion, and Harold; eight loving children—Christopher, Terrance Sr., Shawntee, Mark Jr., Genevieve, Marquise, Malcolm, and Jayquan; goddaughters Crystell and Kuneisha; stepdaughter Jazmin; thirteen grandchildren—Dante, Ahsan, Jalil, Zaveon, Trayvon, Zakeyah, Damodrick, Myale, Demeatrice, Sabria, Omari, Amoni, and Cameron; six great-grandchildren; lifelong friends “Dave & Billy”; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives, and friends who loved him endlessly.

Mark Mitchell Sr. was a remarkable man whose legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Family and friends are invited to the funeral services on Saturday April 19, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Villa Americas Funeral Home located at (279 Roseville Avenue Newark, NJ 07107).
